Hope's Haven: Meet Hope
I’m so so so excited to be writing for FRIZZ. I’ve been pals with Rosie since we were about 8 and she’s always been a talented lil gem, so I’m honoured to be able to have a little slice of her glory!!!
I’ve been writing poetry on Instagram for a year or so now, which has developed into a sole focus on activism, specifically women’s rights. And nah, we’re not talking ‘white feminism’, we’re talking treating trans women as humans not just bodies; we’re talking dismantling the stereotype of the ‘angry black woman’, and we’re talking holding female rapists just as culpable as male rapists. Yeah, it’s heavy and yeah sure it can make people a bit uncomfortable, but I think that’s the point. Since the activism section of my brain got switched on, I’ve not been able to see the world in the comfy bubble that I used to, and to be honest I think that’s a good thing. No more staying quiet when a white person sings the ‘n’ word in a song; no more shrugging it off when a man catcalls you or gropes you in a club, and no more accepting men’s views of periods as ‘taboo’ or ‘disgusting’.
All I wanna do is inspire. My teeny platform on Instagram is grand but the creative writer inside me is banging on the doors trying to get out. Over here, in this mad imaginative haven, she can breathe. I can rant n vent n shout through the words on the screens of you lovely people so that we can open up discussions n change the world’s perceptions of things. I’m gonna tie in some of my artistic background and maybe do some illustrations of inspirational women to accompany some of my feminist poetry. I’m gonna write articles on extended metaphors circling around white privilege. I’m gonna tie in song lyrics and newspaper headlines to make a word collage of all the nonsense of today. All in the hope it turns some heads.
This is a lush platform and I’m so lucky to be given a bit more of a voice in this very busy world. Whether it’s a painting of a woman of colour as prime minister; an in-depth discussion on body hair; a rant on how white women need to acknowledge their complicity in white feminism or just a poem about tummy rolls; trust me when I say it’ll be creative. What a wonderful way to walk through life together eh?
I thought my first lil article would just be an intro to the kinda stuff I’ll chat about, and yes, it’ll sometimes be a bit of a rough ride, but I promise I’ll pop some humour in there to soften the blow. Let’s be brave n badass together.
We’ll be angry and amused together, and I can’t wait!
Big love from Hope x x x x x
